Wonderful Wolfe. If you've never read him, this is a GREAT place to start. Don't confuse him with Tom Wolfe (Bonfire of the Vanities)--different author altogether. As you'll soon discover, once you immerse yourself.Of all American writers, Thomas Wolfe's my favorite by leaps and bounds. His gift for language is unsurpassed. And, even though he died at 38, he was incredibly prolific. SO prolific that after his death, his editor spent YEARS assembling books from crates and crates of disorganized, haphazard bits and pieces of stories. The Southern influence cannot be missed and Wolfe spent his short life trying to overcome the trauma of his family's life and loss in Asheville, NC. Not only alcoholism and financial loss, but the loss of his older (12) brother to typhus. It scarred him in a way he desperately tried to work through on paper. And the result is a colorful collection of literary gems. This one is short (unlike his other epics!) and is an accessible piece of Americana. Give it a try and see what you think!
