An atmospheric and beautifully crafted family saga set mostly in Charleston’s storied South of Broad section, where architectural history, in the present (2025), is still near at hand, and where, in the 1970s setting of this novel, the denizens of this enclave still held close to certain of three centuries of traditional communal values. At its core, this is a story of a challenge to one of those values, and John Warley, in this highly autobiographical novel, takes the reader to that time and place with unquestionable authenticity. In a narrative arc that includes considerable backstory and multiple points-of-view, he manages to maintain dramatic tension throughout and builds emotional heat to two crescendos, the final eight pages showcasing his probable skill as a trial lawyer, leaving this jury member knuckling away tears.
